Structural Guidelines

Local Building Codes:

Make sure to contact your local municipality to see if there any restrictions, regulations, or permits needed for building a greenhouse in your area. In addition, check for any underground utilities such as gas, telephone, cable, or sprinkler lines before digging.

Greenhouse Foundation:

Choose a sunny location with good drainage that is protected from strong winds. If your desired location isn’t flat, level it out. Make sure orient your greenhouse optimally so it will get maximum sunlight.
We recommend your greenhouse base be anchored to a wood post foundation, concrete pier foundation, or concrete slab foundation. See greenhouse plans for details.

Greenhouse Wood Frame:

Cut the lumber and assemble your greenhouse frame according to the provided plans and specifications. Make sure to take accurate measurements before making any cuts. MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE!
Always use exterior screws that have a protective coating to prevent rust, corrosion, and structural failure.
Confirm your greenhouse frame is square and level BEFORE installing the multiwall polycarbonate panels.
NOTE: In lumber, ‘nominal size’ (2×2 or 2×4) refers to the thickness and width of the wood before it’s dried and planed, while ‘actual size’ is the finished size after the wood is processed. The greenhouse plans included with this kit have taken this lumber size difference into consideration.

Installation Tips

Installation Tips:

Masking Film: Indicates which side is UV-protected. Protects panel from scratches. Remove ‘after’ panel is installed.
Polycarbonate U-Channel: Make sure to drill several weep holes to ensure proper moisture drainage.
Polycarbonate H-Channel: Leave a ‘gap’ between panel and H-channel to allow for expansion and contraction.
- Note: To aid with sliding a U-channel or H-channel onto a panel, try squirting soap along the edge or use a putty knife to gently pry open.
Edge Sealing Tape: Should not be exposed to the elements. Cover with a U-channel.
Sealants: Only use a 100% silicone sealant. Check label to ensure product compatibility.
Cutting Panels: Use a fine-tooth blade with at least 10-teeth per inch. A plywood blade is a good choice.
- Note: Polycarbonate U- and H-channels can easily be cut with a tin snip.
Drilling Panels: Predrill holes 1/16” larger than the screw diameter to allow for expansion and contraction.
Fastening Panels: Use neoprene bonded washers. Screw fasteners in straight. Do not over-tighten screws.
